Jim Gilstrap: Hangin’ in the Chow Line
February 8, 1974, the classic sitcom Good Times debuted. Depicting an African American family struggling and triumphing in the urban decay of Chicago, Good Times marks an important turning point of racial representation on network television. Equally as memorable to the show itself is the theme song with Jim Gilstrap singing the lead vocals.
A studio vocalist, Jim Gilstrap has appeared in many great recordings besides the Good Times theme: Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” to the Grease (1978) soundtrack. Gilstrap also had solo success with his 1975 hit “Swing Your Daddy,” but here at Wax Poetics we’re partial to his disco-soul jam “Run, Run, Run” with the group Side Effect.
