By the middle of the decade they were one of the biggest new names in British guitar music; Noel Gallagher called seeing them live a “religious experience.” This cassette catches them at the very start, two years before they signed to Polydor in December 1994. The spine is hand-labeled “Cast Demos ’92,” and the handwritten inlay lists “Sandstorm,” “Four Walls,” “Alright,” “Satellites,” and “Two of a Kind,” with a songwriting credit to John Power.

Several of these songs reappeared three years later on Cast’s debut album, All Change, released in October 1995. It reached No. 7, went double platinum, and became the fastest-selling debut album in Polydor’s history. Two of the songs here became Top 20 singles: “Alright” reached No. 13 and “Sandstorm” No. 8. Here they are in their first recorded form.

Key details & collectability

That’s FX cassette, spine labeled “Cast Demos ’92”

Handwritten inlay with five song titles and a John Power credit

Early versions of “Sandstorm” (UK No. 8) and “Alright” (UK No. 13), both later Top 20 singles

Pre-dates the band’s first record deal

Provenance

From the archive of London producer and engineer Chris Allison.

A percentage of Chris Allison’s proceeds from this collection will be donated to Restore The Music, a social impact charity that addresses systemic inequality in music education by providing capital grants to state schools in areas of high socio-economic deprivation.
