Together they show how the building was laid out and reworked as the club grew through the 1990s and 2000s.

The standout is the ground-floor licensing plan by Pank Hart Architects, dated September 1995 (drawing no. 3071/101, scale 1:100), hand-colored in marker to show the drinking areas, dance floors, liquor storage, kitchen and staff areas, and passageways and toilets, all inside a red line marking the licensed premises, with a location plan in the corner. With it are Pank Hart’s proposed first-floor plan, also from 1995, and a plan of the proposed ground floor and mezzanine by Redjacket.

The club was planned around its sound from day one. Its main room, the Box, was built as “a box within a box,” as club director Matt Long puts it, a sealed room inside the building so the system could run loud, and these drawings map the building that grew up around it. Long can see them on a wall: “If you get them framed up in your house,” he says, they would be an incredible piece of decor.

Key details & collectability

Three original architectural plans of 103 Gaunt Street

Hand-colored ground-floor licensing plan, Pank Hart Architects, September 1995

Proposed first-floor plan, Pank Hart Architects, 1995

Proposed ground floor and mezzanine plans, Redjacket

A floor-by-floor record of one of the world’s most famous clubs

Provenance

Consigned directly by Ministry of Sound, 103 Gaunt Street, London SE1

From the club’s own archive
