Its photocopied inlay carries the band’s name in large type over a black-and-white portrait, and the label lists six songs: “Nancy Boy,” “Teenage Angst,” “36 Degrees,” “Paycheck,” “Flesh Mechanic,” and “Bruise Pristine.”

Three of them—“Nancy Boy,” “Teenage Angst,” and “36 Degrees”—became singles, and “Bruise Pristine” followed later. “Nancy Boy” was the breakthrough: re-recorded and released in January 1997, it went to No. 4 in the UK and sent the band’s debut album back into the chart at No. 5. Here they are in early form, on a tape made to get the band noticed.

Key details & collectability

Demo cassette with printed band artwork inlay

Six songs including “Nancy Boy,” “Teenage Angst,” “36 Degrees,” and “Bruise Pristine”

Early version of “Nancy Boy,” the band’s Top 5 breakthrough single

Provenance

From the archive of London producer and engineer Chris Allison.

A percentage of Chris Allison’s proceeds from this collection will be donated to Restore The Music, a social impact charity that addresses systemic inequality in music education by providing capital grants to state schools in areas of high socio-economic deprivation.
