The Yamaha NS-10M is a compact two-way bookshelf monitor with a paper woofer and a soft-dome tweeter in a black ash-finish cabinet. If a mix sounded balanced and clear in the midrange on NS-10s, it typically translated well to car stereos, boomboxes, and small consumer speakers. Once top studios installed them next to large main monitors, they became a universal “second opinion” check, giving engineers a common baseline when moving between different facilities.

The cabinets are a matched pair of originals from the ’80s and include the original rear spec labels and binding-post terminals. The woofers and tweeters, however, have been replaced over the years and are not matched. Both cabinets show light scuffs and age-related wear to the finish. Grille covers are shown in the photographs.

From the studio collection of Chris Allison.
