Monterrey, a city in northern Mexico that works hard and plays harder, has long been a center of music. From the clubs and bars lining the narrow streets of downtown’s Barrio Antiguo, underground spots like Aparato and Topaz, the Norteño music venues of Pilos Bar, Manhattan Bar, and La Reunion Friendly to big stadium shows and festivals like Pa’l Norte, there is rarely a lack of options available. For one month each summer, an unlikely stage joins these hallowed ranks. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey (MARCO) transforms its normally hushed, elegant central courtyard into a frenetically energized and raucous music venue for its Noches de Verano (Summer Nights). This year, the series brings a diverse array of local, national, and international artists together against the backdrop of the arrival of the FIFA World Cup and Pride Month to Monterrey, expanding the audience in a city that is already here for the party. Beginning in 2023, Noches de Verano has been organized by two prominent Monterrey musicians, Toy Selectah of hip-hop group Control Machete and Gil Cerezo, of rock/electronic band Kinky. These two hail from the city’s La Avanzada Regia of the late ’90s/2000s, a scene that launched local bands into international stardom. This tight-knit movement was unique in its lack of a single defining sound, with each group drawing on its own unique style and influences. Selectah and Cerezo bring this musical fluidity of genre to their selection of the artists slated to perform.
Among the highlights of this summer’s lineup is Mexico City’s Sonido La Changa, a legendary sonidero, a DJ that spins tropical music such as cumbia and salsa while shouting out salutations on a mic over the music, appearing on June 19. Sonido La Changa’s Ramón Rojo Villa is credited with starting this musical style in 1968, popularizing it in the working class districts of the city, and going on to play alongside acts like Bad Bunny, Lana Del Ray, and Iggy pop at music festivals around the world.
Another standout is Debit, the stage name of Delia Beatriz, a Monterrey native who immigrated to the USA at a young age. The artist and producer received critical accolades for her 2025 album Desaceleradas, an ambient take on Monterrey’s subgenre of Cumbia Rebajada, a kind of chopped and screwed-esque sound that was born when Sonido Dueñez’s turntable malfunctioned and slowed down the cumbias he was spinning to half speed. Debit uses audio samples from some of those original mixtapes and inspiration from the extreme style of the Cholombiano scene that sprung up around the sound. Debit’s appearance at Noches de Verano on June 26 comes on the heels of her latest release Potpourri, a decidedly danceable blend of Detroit techno and the Latin electronic style guaracha.
Closing out the series on July 3 is the debut of a new project from Cerezo and the artist Poniboy, the Cherry Boys Club.

These acts perform for a consistently full house made up of Regios hailing from a cross section of Monterrey subcultures. Vaqueros in cowboy hats and snap-button western shirts, hip-hop aficionados, wholesomely-preppy youth, metalheads and more all congregate, dancing and partying together, creating one of the most visually interesting, sharply-dressed and coiffed crowds in a city that is known for its well turned-out citizens. Admission is free and early arrivals can partake in guided tours of the museum’s exhibitions. Whether you are in town for business or pleasure, or looking to escape the summer heat into a hot party, Noches de Verano is not to be missed.
