About the print:
Biz Markie is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in hip hop history, and images from his earliest sessions carry high cultural and historical importance.
Released in 1986, Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz represents the recorded debut of Biz Markie and introduced one of the most original personalities in hip hop to the world. The project established the creative identity that would later define his career, leading to internationally recognized works such as Just a Friend and cementing his place in music history.
The photographs from this session, created by legendary hip hop photographer George DuBose, represent the earliest professional studio portraits of Biz Markie at the beginning of his rise. DuBose is widely known for producing some of the most iconic images in music, including album covers and promotional photography for artists such as Madonna, Eric B. & Rakim, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys.
The imagery from the Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz session captures Biz Markie before mainstream fame, preserving the moment when his visual identity was first formally introduced. These photographs have since become part of the permanent visual canon of hip hop’s formative era.
Because early hip hop photography was rarely preserved, and original negatives were often lost or scattered, surviving archival material from this period is extremely limited. The Biz Markie Estate’s access to the original archive and formal authorization of these images represents one of the only opportunities to acquire estate-sanctioned works from this foundational moment.
Printed using archival pigment inks on museum-grade fine art paper, the scale allows for an immersive viewing experience comparable to major institutional exhibitions.
This work is accompanied by a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Biz Markie Estate and represents the definitive presentation of this historic image.
Once placed, no additional works will ever be produced at this size.
A portion of the proceeds from this release support the Biz Markie Just A Friend Foundation and its charitable mission.
About the event:
The Biz Markie Estate will invite a select group of guests to the private unveiling of The Biz Markie Experience, a new living archive dedicated to preserving and celebrating the life, music, and cultural legacy of Biz Markie. The evening will introduce the platform for the first time and reveal the inaugural collection of estate sanctioned works drawn from the earliest moments of Biz Markie’s career.
Guests will have the opportunity to preview and purchase rare archival photography from the historic “Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz” sessions (shot by George DuBose) and learn about the broader vision behind The Biz Markie Experience. Collectors, collaborators, and friends of the culture will gather for a special night marking the beginning of a new chapter in preserving one of hip hop’s most beloved icons.

What is popcorn bidding?
Any bid that is placed within the final 10 minutes of an auction will reset the clock back to 10 minutes. This will continue happening until no more bids are placed.
It's the fairest way to make sure that everyone has time to put their final bids in.
How do Collections work?
Once the Collection goes live, as well as discovering our stories you'll be able to:
- Bid on auction items: These work like any other auction platform. Register an account to make a bid. We'll keep you updated on emails and SMS (if registered). There's more info on how auctions work in the FAQs below.
- Purchase 'buy-it-now' items: You'll need to move quick on these. They are fixed-price collector items that come directly from the artist themselves.
- Secure limited edition products: These are products that we co-create with artists. They're limited-run. Once they're gone, they're gone.
Pro tip: Make sure you have a Wax Poetics account before the Collection goes live so you can be first in line once the Collection goes live.
How do I bid on an item?
Simply create an account, and your account will be ready to place a bid.
Are there any verification requirements for bidding on an Auction item?
No. But please be aware that if you bid on an item and win the item, you will be required to pay for the item once the Collection has closed.
If you do not pay for the item, it will be offered to the next highest bidder and you will be banned from taking part in future Collections.
What is the Reserve Price?
The minimum amount the item must sell for. If the reserve price is not met, the Auction ends without a winner.
I placed a bid. What happens next?
You will be notified by email or SMS (if registered) about the status of your bid. You will receive notifications for the following:
- If you place a bid successfully
- If you are outbid
- If you win the item
If someone places a bid in the last minute the clock will be extended for an additional 2 minutes until no more bids are placed.
I won an auction item. What happens next?
Congratulations! You will receive an email confirming you have won from us.
We will then share final payment for you to complete. You must complete payment or come back to us within 48 hours. If you haven't paid after this time, we may cancel your winning bid, and the next highest bidder will be offered the item. If you do not pay for an item, you will not be permitted to bid on future Collections.
Can I cancel a bid?
No. Once you place a bid you need to be prepared to pay for it if you win. In exceptional circumstances, please reach out to info@waxpoetics.com in case you need additional support.
