Jam Master Jay Adidas Leather Tracksuit - Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Exhibit Piece
This Adidas leather tracksuit stands as one of the defining pieces in Jam Master Jay’s personal wardrobe, an integral part of the visual identity that helped shape hip-hop culture.
Run-DMC’s adoption of Adidas in the 1980s marked one of the first major intersections between music and a global sportswear brand. This later leather iteration reflects the evolution of that relationship, moving from cotton tracksuits worn in the group’s early years to elevated, premium artificial leather versions that came to define their iconic look and long term partnership with the brand.
According to JMJ’s family, only a very small number of these tracksuits were retained by the family. Many of his apparel pieces were either donated or given away after his passing, making surviving examples from his personal wardrobe scarce. This particular tracksuit was deliberately kept and preserved as part of a small group of his personal items. This tracksuit lived in the Rock & Roll hall of fame after their induction up until 2019.
Gifted to him later in his career, the piece was worn sparingly for a single performance, and then set aside. It was stored alongside personal effects, including other apparel, jewelry and memorabilia.
A rare, preserved example of the uniform that helped define hip-hop style.
