Like tophats and star shades, leather platform boots have been a staple of Bootsy’s look going back to the ‘70s. Bootsy purchased these embossed-leather, square-toe New Rock biker boots in London in the ’90s, wearing them to promotional appearances and photo shoots, as well as everyday uses.
While store-bought, this pair has a number of distinct features which make them stand out even among Spanish shoe brand New Rock’s eclectic catalog of heavy-duty leather boots. These include metal grommets on the fronts and sides (five total on each shoe) with the engraved text "NEW ROCK PLANET"; snakeskin-like embossed leather sides for a two-tone look; metal block heels with springs; and a leather strap accessory (right shoe only) outfitted with three metal-link chains—two across the tongue and another wrapped around the sole.
The boots are well worn, befitting the lifestyle Bootsy was embracing when he purchased them. “This is kind of the punk rock era,” Bootsy says. “I was going to those clubs, and riding bikes. So it fitted all of the things I like to do away from just playing music and being onstage. That whole look, I just loved it, man.”
