Placebo formed in London in the mid-’90s and broke through with their 1996 debut album and the hit “Nancy Boy.” This demo cassette dates from before all that. Its photocopied inlay carries the band’s name in large type over a black-and-white portrait, and the label lists six songs: “Nancy Boy,” “Teenage Angst,” “36 Degrees,” “Paycheck,” “Flesh Mechanic,” and “Bruise Pristine.”

Three of them—“Nancy Boy,” “Teenage Angst,” and “36 Degrees”—became singles, and “Bruise Pristine” followed later. “Nancy Boy” was the breakthrough: re-recorded and released in January 1997, it went to No. 4 in the UK and sent the band’s debut album back into the chart at No. 5. Here they are in early form, on a tape made to get the band noticed.
