The Stone Roses’ 1989 debut album, produced by John Leckie for Zomba’s Silvertone label, became one of the most celebrated British records of its era and has been certified five times platinum in the U.K., for 1.5 million units. This cassette comes from the label side, in a case printed with the Jive Records / Zomba address, and its typed inlay lists ten songs with notes on the mixes. These are early mixes, made before the album’s final mixes were done.

Side One runs “I Wanna Be Adored,” “She Bangs the Drums” (marked “John Leckie original mix”), “Waterfall” (marked “2nd mix”), “Bye Bye Badman,” “Mersey Paradise,” “This Is the One,” “Shoot You Down,” “Made of Stone,” “Sugar Spun Sister,” and “Don’t Stop.”

After the opening three songs, the running order is completely different from the released album. “Don’t Stop” closes the tape rather than following “Waterfall,” “Mersey Paradise”—later a B-side—sits in the middle, and there is no “Elizabeth My Dear” or “I Am the Resurrection.” It is a rare look at the record before it took its final shape.
