Ministry of Sound soundsystem

When Ministry of Sound opened in a former bus garage at 103 Gaunt Street on 21 September 1991, co-founder Justin Berkmann had one rule: “soundsystem first, lights second, design third.” He wanted to bring the sound of New York’s Paradise Garage to London, and around £500,000 of a roughly £750,000 build went on the system. The Box, the club’s main room, was built as “a box within a box,” as club director Matt Long puts it, with the whole emphasis on the sound and the experience in that room. The club even opened without a drinks license; the night was about the dance floor, the speakers, and the DJ. The Box was built around six speaker stacks, a layout it kept for thirty-five years.

These six Martin Audio stacks are the system that ran the Box from 2010 to 2025, fifteen years of Ministry of Sound’s most famous room. Each stack pairs two Martin Audio W8C Wavefront tops with two 18-inch bass bins and two passive 21-inch subwoofers, and is capable of around 25kW.

The rig won Best Club Sound System at the International Dance Music Awards four years running, from 2010 to 2013. Louie Vega, David Morales, Kerri Chandler, and DJ Harvey all played through it. “These speaker stacks are one of the most iconic sound systems in dance,” says Matt Long.

In the club’s thirty-fifth-anniversary refurbishment in January 2026, the Box got a new six-point KV2 system, a DJ booth brought closer to the dance floor, and new lighting and video, and these stacks were retired, the first change to the Box system in fifteen years. The club wants them to go somewhere that carries the legacy on. Long says it would “be amazing to see it go into another nightclub,” though a collector or a private home is just as welcome. All six stacks come with XTA amplifiers, direct from the club.
