The Saint – Architectural Booklet (early 1980s)
This original booklet documents the architectural design and technical construction of The Saint, the New York nightclub that operated from 1980 to 1988 in the former Fillmore East building at 105 Second Avenue.
The Saint was purpose-built as a members-only club and is widely noted for its large planetarium-style dome, which enclosed a circular dance floor beneath a custom lighting and projection system. The venue incorporated advanced audio engineering and a central performance structure beneath the dome, with tiered seating and balcony levels surrounding the main floor.
The booklet includes architectural floor plans (first level, second level, and balcony), elevation drawings, structural diagrams of the dome and lighting apparatus, and photography of the interior installation. It outlines the conceptual development of the space, including references to the dome, sound system design, lighting mechanics, and spatial layout. The material reflects the technical ambition behind the venue’s construction and its positioning as a purpose-designed dance environment.
The Saint opened in September 1980 and became a significant fixture in New York nightlife during the early-to-mid 1980s, particularly within the city’s LGBTQ+ club culture. The club closed in 1988.
This booklet appears to be a period-produced document rather than later retrospective material, presenting detailed architectural and technical information about the venue at or near the time of operation.
