Detroit Grande Ballroom – Crazy World of Arthur Brown Postcard
An original Grande Ballroom postcard for a four-night run spanning Wednesday, May 29 through Saturday, June 1: the Crazy World of Arthur Brown headlined the first two nights, while Love headlined the last two with the Crazy World of Arthur Brown as direct support, sharing the bill across the run with Toad, Carousel, Jaggedge, Rhino of Soul, Wilson Mower Pursuit and, on the Saturday, the Psychedelic Stooges.
The artwork - a skeletal clawed hand reaching from a radiating halo - is a striking piece of line illustration, keeping in line with the Grande's reputation for commissioning bold, original poster art.
Arthur Brown, known for performing in a flaming helmet behind the transatlantic hit "Fire," represented exactly the kind of theatrical, shock-driven psychedelic showmanship the Grande Ballroom was built to host, on a bill that also caught the Stooges performing under their original "Psychedelic Stooges" billing. Sharing the bill was Love, the legendary LA psychedelic rock band, making a rare Detroit appearance.
This example comes from the personal collection of Mary Cobra (Mary Ramirez), founding guitarist of The Detroit Cobras, and is one of the more visually striking designs in this collection.
