Weldon Irvine - "Master-Wel Presents The Price of Freedom: The Amadou Project" CD - sealed Add to favourites
This is Don Blackman’s personal copy of Weldon Irvine’s 1999 CD release mAster-Wel Presents The Amadou Project: The Price of Freedom, given to him by the artist himself as a token of their friendship and his participation in the project.
Irvine conceived The Amadou Project, originally a CD-only release through his Nodlew Music label, as a response to the NYPD’s killing that year of an unarmed 23-year-old Guinean student named Amadou Diallo in a shocking case of police violence, and recorded much of it at Don’s home studio in South Jamaica, Queens.
Recorded around the time Irvine joined Mos Def in the studio to record tracks like “Umi Says” for the rapper’s Black On Both Sides album—with Don Blackman joining him in Mos Def’s backing band at live appearances supporting the project—The Amadou Project followed in the spoken-word vein of Irvine’s earlier ’90s work, with early appearances from Mos Def and Talib Kweli (on “Hip Hop Speaks” and “Make It All Better”) as well as names like Q-Tip, Rich Medina and James Mtume.
Don Blackman himself appears on five tracks: The opener “Amadou,” a remix of “Prankster Gangster” from 1997’s Spoken Melodies (Embrace The Positive), “Hollow Points,” “Blues for Amadou,” and Amadou’s Journey.”
