S*M*A*S*H - Sub Pop ‘Barabbas (Piloted)’ / ‘Turn On the Water’: Two Session DATs, Konk Cassette + 7-Inch (SP276)
In 1994 S*M*A*S*H made a one-off single for Sub Pop, the Seattle label that first released Nirvana, while the rest of their records came out on Hut in Britain. The single paired “Barabbas (Piloted)” with “Turn On the Water,” a cover of a song by their Sub Pop labelmates the Afghan Whigs, and this lot gathers it from session to shelf.
There are two DATs from the sessions. The first is a Konk Studios DAT marked “S*M*A*S*H 25/8/94,” its inlay filled in for Sub Pop with “Barabbas” and “Turn On the Water.” The second, labeled “Sub Pop S*M*A*S*H 26.8.94,” is a Town House DAT of the digitally EQ’d production master, with “Barabbas” (3:43) marked for the 7-inch A-side and “Turn On the Water” (4:28) for the B-side. With them is a Konk Studios TDK cassette dated 24.8.94 with “Turn On the Water,” “Some of These People Round Here,” “Total Confusion,” and “Monster Bass Jam.” The finished single is here too, a limited-edition colored-vinyl 7-inch (Sub Pop SP276).
