Neil Hannon’s Divine Comedy were at their commercial peak at the end of the ’90s, with a string of hit singles behind them. This Maxell XLII 60 cassette, in a Parlophone case and spine-labeled “The Divine Comedy – LP Demos,” holds his demos for the next record. The typed inlay, marked “Parlophone ’99,” lists six songs—“Mastermind,” “Edward the Confessor,” “Timestretching,” “The New Middle Ages,” “The Story of O,” and “Unnatural Love”—each with a percentage beside it in what looks like a progress check.

That next record became Regeneration, the band’s first album for Parlophone, produced by Nigel Godrich and released in March 2001. Only some of these songs made it. “Mastermind” appears on the album, and “Timestretching” became its opening track, “Timestretched.” “Edward the Confessor” was released as a B-side on the “Bad Ambassador” single. The other three—“The New Middle Ages,” “The Story of O,” and “Unnatural Love”—do not appear on any Divine Comedy album or single that we can find, which makes this tape a rare record of songs that never came out.
