An original flyer promoting a 1980 acoustic piano performance at the Penthouse Loft in Greenwich Village, New York City, featuring Don (billed as Donald Blackman) alongside the late Delmar Brown (who would go on to play with Dave Matthews and Maceo Parker in J-Funk Express), Diane Kirkpatrick and drummer Kenwood Dennard (Brand X).
On the timeline of Don’s career, this gig would fall somewhere between his time as a member of Twennynine with Lenny White and the recording of his 1982 solo debut. In contrast to the raunchy funk Don and his band the Family Tradition performed on the “Blackman Album” however, this gig would have found Don showcasing his acoustic piano chops in an intimate and high-minded jazz setting — as seen in this clip from his personal VHS archives believed to be from this same event.
