This is the only known copy of Weldon Irvine’s I Play The Piano CD, an undated compilation of live recordings made in Jamaica, Queens between 1976 and 1984, which can not be heard anywhere else. Not only is this Don’s personal copy of the CD, but Don assembled and printed it up himself in the 1990s as a token of his friendship with Irvine, his longtime mentor and friend.
The disc’s seven tracks, recorded across three gigs between two Jamaica, Queens area nightclubs, Gerald’s and Charmichael’s, feature Irvine backed by a cast of Jamaica Kats all-stars including Don Blackman on piano, Tom Browne on trumpet, bassist Steve Teele, and drummers Omar Hakim and Howie Grate. Other players who appear include singer Myrna Lake, alto saxophonist Charles “C.I.” Williams, and flutist Dottie Gray.
Easily one of the rarest releases in Weldon Irvine’s substantial catalog and one of the only recordings to feature Irvine playing alongside two of his most notable mentees in Don Blackman and Tom Browne, this is a holy grail for any fan of the Jamaica, Queens scene sound.
